ROUNDWORM DISEASE IN POULTRY

Publish date: 18/06/2024

1. Characteristics of roundworm disease in poultry
- Caused by Ascaridia galli, a type of roundworm.
- A common disease in poultry, occurring at all ages.
- The worms invade the poultry body and parasitize in the poultry's small intestine, sometimes also in the bile duct.
2. Transmission methods
- Adult poultry infected with roundworms excrete eggs into the environment and infect young poultry through contaminated food and water containing worm eggs.
- After being excreted into the environment, the roundworm eggs develop into infective eggs under favorable conditions such as temperature and humidity (about 5-25 days). Poultry ingest these eggs through food and water into the stomach, where the larvae hatch and migrate to the small intestine. After being ingested for 1-2 hours, the larvae move to the small intestine and develop there (about 19 days). The time from poultry ingesting infective eggs to when the worms mature and parasite in the small intestine is about 35-58 days.
3. Symptoms
- Roundworm causes more severe symptoms in young poultry. The development period of roundworms in young poultry is usually 30-35 days, while in mature poultry, it is 50 days.
- Mild cases: Indistinct symptoms, poultry still eat well but appear thin, with rough feathers, slow growth and get diarrhea.
- Severe cases: Reduced appetite, anemia, pale combs, dry legs, lethargy, reluctance to move, diarrhea, sometimes visible roundworms in the feces with a lot of feces sticking around the cloaca. If left untreated, neurological symptoms may occur with mild paralysis. In laying hens, egg production decreases by 10-20% without clear reasons. Sometimes, some poultry die suddenly due to intestinal obstruction or perforation.

4. Pathological features
- The corpse poultry is thin, stunted, with dry legs and a pale crest.
- Many roundworms in the small intestine, ranging from 2-7cm or even 11cm, sometimes clumps of worms are visible.
- Swollen, inflamed small intestine mucosa with hemorrhage.

5. Disease prevention
To effectively prevent the disease, follow these measures:
* Cleanliness and disinfection of the poultry house:
Step 1: Clean up all waste, feces, litter, etc., from the poultry coop and dispose of them properly in a compost pit then spread lime powder on the surface.
Step 2: Use a high-pressure water hose to clean dirt from the roof, walls and floor of the coop, especially feces on the coop floor.
Step 3: Clean all feeding and drinking troughs then soak them in a solution of disinfectants such as Five-Iodine, Five-BKG, Five-Perkon 3S or Five-BKG for 2-3 hours before drying them.
Step 4: Spread lime powder on the coop floor then pump water onto it to soak and use the lime water to wash the coop walls, fence walls and coop corridors (for free-range or grazing areas, after each batch of poultry, plow and spread lime powder over the entire area to kill worm and parasite eggs).
Step 5: After cleaning and drying the coop, spread the tarpaulin and spray the entire inside and outside of the coop and grazing areas with disinfectants such as Five-Iodine, Five-BKG, Five-Perkon 3S, or Five-BKG.
Step 6: 2-3 days before introducing new poultry, bring all poultry farming equipment into the coop and fumigate with Foocmol, a purple medicine to disinfect.
* Care and feeding:
- Proper care and feeding practices should be followed. Provide adequate and clean food and water. Regularly supplement or replace coop bedding with lime powder to prevent the development of parasite eggs that cause disease. You can use one of the following products: Five-Iodine, Five-B.K.G, Five-Perkon 3S, or Five-BGF for thorough disinfection once a week.
- To enhance digestion and absorption of food, provide digestive enzymes such as Five-Enzym, Five-Lacenzym Garlic, Five-Mix, Beta-Glucan.C Garlic, Five-Aminovit Super. Treatment duration: 3-5 days, twice a month.
- Always ensure that the poultry house area is dry to prevent stagnant water.
* Use preventive medication:
- Use one of the following medications to prevent the disease: Five-Leva, Hado-Levasol, Five-Alben.100 Oral, Five-Fenbenzol,... dilute according to the instructions on the product packaging. The first prevention should be done at 25-30 days of age, the second at 60-65 days of age. For breeding poultry or laying hens, repeat every 2-3 months.
Treatment duration: one dose only.

6. Treatment
- Specific medications: Use one of the specific medications such as Five-Leva, Hado-Levasol, Five-Alben.100 Oral, Five-Ivertin.100 oral, Five-Fenbenzol,... The dosage should follow the instructions on the product packaging. Mix with food or dilute in water for administration.
Treatment duration: one dose only.
- Enhance immunity, detoxify the body and boost immunity:
- Use Five-Bogama, Five-Orgamin, Five-Orgacid, Beta-Glucan.C garlic,...
- Vitamin and mineral supplementation: Five-B.Complex, Five-Vitamin B1, Five-Mix, Five-Aminovit Super,... Continuous treatment for 3-5 days.
