
The workshop of Safety for Poultry Products in Vietnam was held on November 15th, 2013 in Grand Plaza Hanoi by Vietnam Department of Animal Health, Vietnam poultry association along with USA Poultry & Egg Export Council (USAPEEC) and U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC)
Attending the workshop are Mr. Vu Van Tam – Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Brian Ronholm – Deputy Minister of US Agriculture, Mr. James Sumner – President of UIPDP, Mr. Tran Cong Xuan – President of Vietnam poultry Association, Dr. Nguyen Thi Huong (
Fivevet CEO) – Vice President of Vietnam poultry Association and more than 100 delegates from production businesses of animal feeds, veterinary medicines, companies specializing in production and provision of poultry breeds and livestock farmers in the northern provinces.
In the opening speech, the representative of Vietnam Animal Health Department – MA.Nguyen Xuan Duong emphasized the role of Poultry Industry which attained encouraging growth in recent years – 5.6% increase in 2008 – 2012 (chicken and waterfowl are 6.2% and 4.0%, respectively). Poultry output in 2008 – 2012 went up by 12.9% per capita, egg production increased by 10.1%. The growth is significant because the technical advances of poultry breeding, feeds, animal health and processes of poultry care, production are increasingly applied.
Afterwards, “Methods of investigating poultry products for the purpose of food safety” was presented by Prof.Dr. Dau Ngoc Hao. In his presentation, the meaning of controlling poultry products to assure food safety for consumers, limit infection were highlighted. Mr. James Sumner – President of USAPEE continued the workshop with the report of “US Poultry development mission and mission of USAPEE”. He showed needs and potential of poultry Industry which were illustrated in increasing consumption of poultry products In 1960, average consumption per capita in the world is 0.2kg and this number is up to 11.7 kg in 2008 and 12.3kg in 2012. As per statistics, consumption volume of chicken eggs is 13.5 million ton in China, 13.3 million ton in US, 9.1 million ton in Russia and 0.8 million ton in Vietnam. Countries with most poultry production in the world in 2012 include US (22.7%), China (16.6%), Brazil (15.3%). Through this presentation, it can be seen that needs and potential of Vietnam poultry industry are very high which is a good opportunity for foreign and domestic investors to do business in poultry sector.

In the afternoon, Dr. Basilia P Reas (USSEC) presented nutrition and it’s relation with diseases and Ms. Shelly Mckee (UIPDP) talked about food safety from farm to fork , good agriculture practices, biological safety, best management in breeding development in US and best practices in processing and food safety.
In the closing speech, MA.Tran Cong Xuan – President of Vietnam Poultry Association appreciated the success of the workshop because of the cooperation from USAPEE, USSEC, UIPDP, association of companies, farms producing and trading poultry breeding, animal feeds, veterinary medicines in the Northern provinces
